UK: Teens' drink and drugs lifestyle
Sky News
Wednesday 10 Oct 2001 Heavy smoking, drinking and the occasional use of cannabis are "normal" for teenagers across the UK. A study claims the country's young people have a "serious problem" with drinking and smoking. A third of all girls surveyed and four out of ten boys had used some form of drug, most commonly cannabis. Fewer than one in ten had never drunk alcohol and seven out of ten had at some time been drunk. Drug abuse was most common among boys in Scotland and least common in Wales and Northern Ireland. The 1999 study was carried out by the Alcohol and Health Research Centre in Edinburgh. It surveyed 1,361 girls and 1,280 boys attending 223 state and private schools.
