UK: MP launches 'legalise cannabis bill'
ePolitix
Wednesday 17 Oct 2001 A Labour MP today launches a Commons bill to legalise the personal use of cannabis. The Legalisation of Cannabis Bill is set for a House of Commons debate on October 26 and has been drafted by Labour MP for Cardiff Central, Jon Owen Jones. "All over the world it is becoming clear that cannabis use is a fact of life and trying to deal with it through the criminal justice system is absurd. Legalisation is the most rational way forward," he said. The bill is supported by human rights campaigners Liberty and would legalise the personal cultivation of cannabis and its use for "therapeutic and recreational purposes". "The public don't want our police force frittering their energies over a victimless 'crime' like cannabis use. Our drug laws are arcane and outdated," said Liberty's campaign director, Mark Littlewood. If law, the bill could turn the UK into an Amsterdam-style Mecca for dope smokers setting up a licensing regime for the commercial cultivation and import of cannabis. The Owen Jones bill has been sponsored by Labour MPs including Paul Flynn , Ian Gibson, Brian Idden, Diane Abbot, John Austin, Tony Banks, Jeremy Corbyn, Lynn Jones and Austin Mitchell and the Lib Dem MPs Mike Hancock and Dr Jenny Tonge.
