Basildon: Cannabis charge trio bailed

Three men accused of smuggling £1million of cannabis with intent to
supply have been granted bail by Basildon magistrates.

They were arrested by detectives from the National Crime Squad who
swooped on Bentley Farm in Old Church Hill, Langdon Hills. In a joint
operation, police and customs officers discovered the cannabis, which
weighed half a ton, in metal boxes under scrap metal on a tipper
lorry.

Richard Beckett, 52, a caretaker from the Moat House hotel in
Southminster Road, Mayland near Maldon, was granted conditional bail
of £50,000.

William Sartin, 39, was also granted conditional bail of £50,000. He
was ordered to reside at his father's house in The Poplars, Pitsea.
The third man, 29-year-old Scott Pearmain of Beecham Court, Laindon,
was released on conditional bail of £10,000.

The three, who must all report daily to police, will now reappear
before Basildon magistrates on December 6.
