Volunteers in drink, drug and drive study

Tests are to start soon on the links between cannabis, alcohol and
driving.

Volunteers are to take cannabis followed by alcohol and then try to
control a car on a driver simulator at the Transport Research
Laboratory (TRL) at Crowthorne in Berkshire.

The tests, carefully controlled by doctors who will be on hand
throughout, will last until December. They follow tests by the TRL on
the effect of cannabis alone on driving performance.

These test results have been passed to the Department of Transport but
have not yet been published. However, it is thought that they will
show that cannabis taking by motorists may not be so dangerous as
consumption of alcohol.

The latest TRL test comes as the Government prepares to publish a
report on drug taking by drivers. No official details of the results
of this three-year study have been given. But it is thought the report
will indicate that the number of people found with drugs in their
system jumped from 3% to 18% in the 10 years from 1989.
