Drug abuse in Forces is rising Andy McSmith Telegraph Thursday 16 Nov 2000 DRUG abuse in the Armed Forces has risen by 20 per cent in the past year, according to a parliamentary written answer to the Liberal Democrat defence spokesman Paul Keetch. John Spellar, defence minister, said 580 of the 109,554 soldiers in the British Army had tested positive for drugs in the 10 months since January as opposed to 485 in the whole of last year. In the Royal Navy, 41 of the 42,250 sailors tested positive, as opposed to 33 last year, while 14 of the RAF's 54,279 airmen were caught compared to 10 last year. The vast majority tested positive for cannabis.
