Monkey business

Iain Grant

Guardian

Tuesday 14 Nov 2000

Researchers at the Maryland Institute believe they have conclusive
evidence that cannabis is addictive after four squirrel monkeys were
trained to inject themselves with a cannabis solution. When salt water
was substituted for the dope, the monkeys ceased to bother, but they
instantly became more enthusiastic once the dope was reintroduced.
Rather than proving that dope is addictive, the researchers may have
proved the monkeys are more intelligent than expected. After all, what
else are you supposed to do if you're left sitting around in a cage
for days on end?
