Monkey business Iain Grant Guardian Tuesday 14 Nov 2000 Researchers at the Maryland Institute believe they have conclusive evidence that cannabis is addictive after four squirrel monkeys were trained to inject themselves with a cannabis solution. When salt water was substituted for the dope, the monkeys ceased to bother, but they instantly became more enthusiastic once the dope was reintroduced. Rather than proving that dope is addictive, the researchers may have proved the monkeys are more intelligent than expected. After all, what else are you supposed to do if you're left sitting around in a cage for days on end?
