Drug haul in crates of Tesco strudel Michael Fleet Telegraph Thursday 18 Nov 1999 CUSTOMS officials are hunting drug dealers who tried to smuggle cannabis worth nearly £250,000 into Britain in crates full of Tesco apple strudel. The drugs, stuffed between boxes of strudel, were found when staff at several branches of the supermarket prepared to put the desserts on the shelves. Investigators are now trying to discover how the gang had planned to collect their 150lb haul of cannabis. A Customs spokesman said: "This is obviously a smuggling operation which has gone wrong. Drug dealers don't want to go into shops to get their hands on the cannabis." The Tesco own-brand strudels - apple and mincemeat, apple and strawberry and woodland fruit - were produced in Germany and are priced at between 99p and £1.59. A spokesman for Tesco said: "Store staff contacted the police after they discovered suspicious packages in the delivery. The police have now handed the matter over to Customs and Excise and we are working very closely with them." It is thought that the drugs were either put into the wrong consignment or that a planned interception did not happen. The customs spokeman said: "The drugs were certainly not meant to end up at the supermarkets. Something went seriously wrong for the gang."
