Sweet find for drugs officers

Customs officers have seized 70 kilos of cannabis hidden in cases of
apple strudel delivered to a number of Tesco supermarkets.

Police were alerted after staff at some stores in south east England
found the drug among the German-made desserts.

The consignments are thought to have then been traced back to the
Tesco distribution centre at Snodland, near Maidstone, in Kent.

A Customs and Excise spokeswoman refused to say which stores the drugs
had been found at, but said officers were working closely with Tesco
to investigate the incident. She stressed there was not risk to the
public.

The spokeswoman said: "There is absolutely no food contamination issue
involved here, as the cannabis was not inside the wrapping of any of
the items."

A spokeswoman for Tesco said: "Store staff contacted the police after
they discovered suspicious packages within the delivery.

"The police have now handed the matter on to Customs and Excise and we
are working very closely with them."
