Cannabis smuggler jailed for 5 years

Julian Vincent, 35, from Cape Town, was stopped by customs officers as
he passed through the "nothing to declare" channel at Edinburgh
airport on4 August, the High Court in Edinburgh heard. A search of his
suitcase revealed almost 16 kilos of cannabis with a potential street
value of £82,000. Asked if he had anything to say, Vincent, a film
industry cameraman, replied: "Guilty. I don't want to waste the
Scottish court's time."

The advocate-depute, Jamie Gilchrist, said that Vincent had maintained
that he was working on his own because he had needed the money.

The defence solicitor-advocate, Vincent Belmonte, said that Vincent's
girlfriend had contracted leukaemia and her private treatment in South
Africa had exhausted the couple's funds. Their home was under threat
of repossession and Vincent, a university graduate, had hoped to make
about £30,000 by selling the cannabis in Britain.

Lord Marnoch told Vincent: "It is sad to see someone with your
background in the dock. However, knowing all the risks, you chose to
import into this country cannabis with a street value in excess of
£80,000."
