Business chiefs join dope-smoking politicians Andrew Grice Reuters Tuesday 17 Oct 2000 LONDON (Reuters) - It's not just politicians who are partial to the odd puff of cannabis -- a survey to be published on Thursday shows one in three finance directors have dabbled with the drug too. The survey by Accountancy Age magazine with Reed Personnel showed 33 percent of company finance directors said they had tried cannabis. "It's great, I recommend it," one of the top accountants enthused. The findings will fuel a debate about cannabis sparked when eight senior members of the opposition Conservative party admitted this month they had used the drug in the past. The admissions undermined a new hardline Conservative policy on soft drugs unveiled by home affairs spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe. Her pledge to impose 100 pound fines on all users, if the Conservatives win the next elections, was instantly dismissed by police as unworkable and derided by Labour. "Cannabis should be treated the same way as alcohol," another finance director told the survey. Even some of the business chiefs who said they had not tried the drug supported decriminalisation. "Enforcing the law is a waste of police time," said one. A survey published on Tuesday showed 80 percent of Britons think cannabis should be decriminalised.
