UK: Dope law to be softened

Sky News

Monday 22 Oct 2001

---
People who smoke cannabis should soon have less to fear from the law.The
drug is to be downgraded to a class C drug rather than class B, the Home
Secretary David Blunkett has recommended..

The move is a major shift in Government policy on cannabis.

The plans will mean the penalty for possessing the drug will be reduced and
there will be less pressure on the police to prosecute users. Mr Blunkett
said that would allow police and the courts to concentrate on harder drugs,
"crack and heroin, in particular".

'Adult debate'

Earlier this year, Mr Blunkett said he wanted an "adult debate" on
cannabis, adding there was "no easy way forward".

Among the drugs which are currently category C are steroids and tranquilisers.

Several Labour backbenchers, including Newport West MP Paul Flynn, have
called for the legalisation of cannabis.
