UK: Cannabis admission upsets campaigners

Ananova

Saturday 27 Oct 2001

---
Anti-drugs protesters have criticised Jonathan Ross for publicly admitting
smoking cannabis.

He told listeners about the experience on his Radio 2 show.

BBC bosses have played down the incident, claiming Ross admitted he didn't
enjoy it and wouldn't do it again.

Alastair Ramsay of Scotland Against Drugs told The Daily Record: "Public
figures making statements about cannabis for their own personal use can
minimise the dangers of these drugs.

"This kind of influence is not helpful in encouraging young people to make
the right choices."

The BBC says listeners familiar with Ross's upfront style wouldn't be
shocked by the admission.

A spokesman said: "In no way did Jonathan advocate or condone drugs. He
said he did not enjoy it and was not proud of it.

"Listeners will be familiar with his style, and here, he was talking about
a personal experience in his own home."
