UK: Man took cannabis to relieve anxiety

The Evening Advertiser (Swindon)

Friday 02 Nov 2001

---
DRIVER David Barrett was fined £60 by magistrates after admitting taking
cannabis to alleviate stress and anxiety.

Barrett, 29, of Langley Burrell, said his GP was aware he took the Class-C
drug for medical reasons.

North Wiltshire magistrates ordered Barrett to pay the fine, as well as £40
costs, after he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug.

Prosecuting, Cedric Allen said Barrett was stopped by police driving a Ford
Escort at around 2am on October 25, near Chippenham.

He said police asked for his documents and then searched the car, finding
6.9g of cannabis worth £24.

"When questioned about the matter by police he said he takes cannabis
because he suffers from stress," Mr Allen said.

Defending, Stephen Clifford said Barrett's GP had put him on prescribed
medication for stress.

"The GP is aware he smokes cannabis to alleviate the way he feels but Mr
Barrett said he has told him it is not something he can prescribe," said
Mr Clifford.

Home Secretary David Blunkett has proposed to re-categorise cannabis from a
Class-B to a Class-C drug, making it no longer an offence to be in
possession of the drug.

"It is highly unlikely that in six months he would be prosecuted for this
sum of cannabis," said Mr Clifford.

"I cannot say hand on heart that he will not use cannabis again in the
future but he is somebody who hopes that cannabis can be supplied by GPs
for those who suffer from stress and anxiety."

Magistrates also ordered the destruction of the cannabis.
