UK: Pubs aim to sniff out drug abusers
Stephen Rawlings Braintree and Witham Times
Thursday 01 Nov 2001 SNIFFER dogs could soon be a regular sight for the county's pub and club as licensees hunt for better ways to crack down on drugs. Publicans from Pubwatch schemes across Essex are gather=ADing at a= county-wide meeting tomorrow aimed at tackling prob=ADlems in the drinks trade. Essex Police, Pubwatch members and security company Grosvenor International Services' (GIS) are coming together to discuss ways of bringing down crime and anti-social behaviour in and around licensed premises. As part of the meeting (GIS) are conducting a demonstration of a passive search by sniffer dogs to show publican types of facilities available in the commercial sector. (GIS) principal director John Franklin-webb said: "The need to ensure appropriate measures are in place for deterring drug abuse has never been greater "An accountable counter-drug strategy and regular monitoring through drugs audits will assist in promoting due diligence. We are in the business of driv=ADing drugs not people out of licensed premises. PC Paul Bird, Essex Police licensing officer, said: "Making Essex a safer place to live can only be achieved through working in Partnership. The existing Pub-watch schemes in Essex are an excellent example of a partnership working approach. "Pubwatch Day provides an opportunity to Promote and share crime reduction ideas and skills among existing members. It also provides an opportunity for representatives of 'licensing - communities' which do not yet have a Pubwatch scheme to learn the true value of Pubwatch. Hopefully they will leave the event inspired to construct their own watch schemes which can only be of benefit to their individual business and to the safety of their local community."
