UK: Campaigner sent drugs to politicians
Ananova
Monday 05 Nov 2001 A cannabis legalisation campaigner has been arrested after sending joints containing the drug to every single member of the Irish Parliament. Luke Flanagan, 29, posted the roll-ups to the 60 senators and 166 deputies as part of an ongoing campaign to have the drug legalised. So far only a handful of deputies in the lower chamber, the Dail, have reported receiving the consignments, which were discovered by officials on high alert for anthrax parcels. Police said they arrested a 29-year-old man on Monday afternoon in Dublin and were holding him at Pearse Street garda station in the city centre. He was detained after attempting to deliver a cannabis plant to the minister with responsibility for drugs, Eoin Ryan, at the Department of Tourism. A police spokeswoman said: "A man is being held in relation to an investigation which is under way into the sending of drugs to Government offices." A spokeswoman for Mr Ryan added: "He was approached by some members of our garda force here before he got to the building. "The minister was not in at the time." Just before his arrest, Flanagan, from Castlerea, Co Roscommon, released a statement saying he had sent the packages to highlight the hypocrisies of cannabis prohibition. He said: "I have posted a joint containing cannabis herb to every member of the Oireachtas (Parliament). I have also sent each member a list of 10 reasons as to why I believe cannabis should be legalised." The campaigner, who recently changed his name to Ming the Merciless, has campaigned for years for legalisation. He ran for Parliament on a pro-cannabis ticket in the last General Election, polling 540 votes.
