India: India bans smoking in public places
Ananova
Friday 02 Nov 2001 India's Supreme Court has banned smoking in public places across the country. A two-judge bench has directed the authorities to immediately issue orders to ban smoking in public places and on public transport across the country. The prohibition was already place in some states. The court order supercedes government legislation introduced in parliament earlier this year, which still had to be approved by the lawmakers. The court order came in response to a public interest petition against smoking filed by Murli Deora, a former lawmaker. Places where smoking is being banned include hospitals, public offices, public transport, court buildings, educational institutions, libraries and auditoriums. Tobacco firms are already not allowed to advertise their products on television or in newspapers in India.
