Ananova
Monday 12 Nov 2001 A Government agency says crack cocaine and heroin users should advise ministers on the best ways of treating drug addicts. The National Treatment Agency says listening to their views would help ministers understand what does and what doesn't work. Paul Hayes, head of the NTA, made his comments to the Big Issue magazine. A spokesman for the Big Issue says that by targeting resources at treatments considered successful by drug users, the Government could reduce the number of addicts who relapsed. This, he adds, could lead to a fall in the Government's bill for tackling crime and health problems linked to use of Class A drugs. Experts at the NTA want drug users sitting on powerful committees whose tasks are to study ways of stamping out addiction. Mr Hayes told the magazine: "Involving drug treatment service users in the planning and monitoring of treatment is a priority for ministers and will inform all areas of our work."
