UK: Law change 'will tempt more to try cannabis'

---
Thousands of young people will be tempted to try cannabis for the first
time as a result of the Government's proposals to re-classify the drug,
according to a new survey.

Proposed changes in the law announced by Home Secretary David Blunkett last
month would see cannabis changed from a Class B to a Class C drug.

This would mean people would not face arrest for the possession of small
amounts of the drug.

In a survey conducted for music magazine, NME, over 60% of respondents, who
had never previously smoked the drug, said they would be tempted if the law
changed.

More than 2,200 people took part in the survey with a total of 87%
admitting to smoking cannabis regularly.

A third of those surveyed said they thought the changes in the law were a
good idea but a 56% said they wanted the Government to go further and
legalise the drug.

The use of the cannabis among the young was also revealed to be high with
41% of people admitting trying the drug by the age of 14.

The survey also revealed a significant number of people would like to see a
relaxation in the law regarding other harder drugs.

Over 30% of respondents called for a change in law regarding the Class A
drug, Ecstasy, with 21% calling for total legalisation.
