UK the 'Druggie of Europe'
Ananova
Tuesday 20 Nov 2001 Britain has the biggest drug problem in Europe. Figures show the UK has a higher illegal drug usage across a whole range than any other European country. Cocaine use is a particular worry but arrests for drug offences are down in the UK. The figures come from the EU's annual report on the European drugs problem. The UK along with France has the highest cannabis use amongst 15 and 16-year-olds at 35%. The adult use of Ecstasy and amphetamines is more than double the rate in the UK than the rest of Europe. Heroin use is also rising in the UK - against the trend of most other countries. But the UK along with Belgium are the only EU countries to see a drop in drug related arrests according to the EU wide report. Britain also accounts for most of the amphetamines, ecstasy and LSD seized in the EU and third of all heroin. The UK by far accounts for most seizures of ecstasy tablets, with 6,000 individual seizures netting six million tablets. Cocaine use is a particular worry in the UK and elsewhere, with the report warning 'base' crack cocaine being turned into ready-to-smoke 'Rock' and "pushed up-market." The Home Office says its new drug policy will target class A drugs more and drug use is still in a minority among adults and children.
