UK: Twelve arrested at cafe run by cannabis campaigner

Nigel Bunyan

The Telegraph

Wednesday 21 Nov 2001

---
TWELVE people were arrested yesterday when police raided the Dutch-style
cafe run by a prominent pro-cannabis campaigner.

Colin Davies, owner of the Dutch Experience in Stockport, Greater
Manchester, was among those taken away by police and later charged.

More than a dozen police officers entered the cafe while a BBC television
crew were interviewing Mr Davies and some of his customers.

The raid came on the day Mr Davies, who supports the use of cannabis for
medicinal purposes, was due to answer police bail in connection with his
arrest at the cafe in September.

Greater Manchester Police said later that they had arrested 11 men and a woman.

Two people were charged with being involved in the management of premises
being used for the misuse of a controlled drug, and one was charged with
possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Nine other people were charged with possession of a controlled drug.

Supt Richard Crawshaw said later: "It would be unwise for anyone to make
the assumption that flagrant defiance of the law is or ever will be allowed
by the police."
