UK: Cannabis campaigners arrested
Ananova
Saturday 24 Nov 2001 Police are questioning 12 cannabis campaigners for allegedly smoking the drug outside a police station. They were among demonstrators gathered outside Stockport police station protesting about a raid on Britain's first Dutch-style coffee shop. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said around 30 people took part in a "peaceful protest". Officers are understood to have moved in when 12 demonstrators each lit up a cannabis cigarette. Veteran campaigner Colin Davies, who has smoked the drug to relieve pain since he broke his spine four years ago, was among those detained in Tuesday's raid on the Dutch Experience Cafe in Stockport. He launched the venture in September this year, saying he hoped to offer the drug to sick people to relieve their symptoms. The 44-year-old, from Brinnington, Greater Manchester, faces a number of drug-related charges including permitting premises to be used for the smoking of cannabis, possessing cannabis with the intent to supply, possessing a controlled drug and being concerned in the supply of cannabis. Two other men were charged while a further nine people were cautioned for possession of cannabis.
