UK: Cannabis campaigners arrested

Sky News

Sunday 25 Nov 2001

---
Police are questioning 12 cannabis campaigners after they allegedly smoked
the drug outside a police station.

They were among demonstrators gathered outside Stockport police station,
Greater Manchester, protesting about a raid on Britain's first Dutch-style
coffee shop earlier this week.

Smoke

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said about 30 people congregated
outside the police station for what was described as a "peaceful protest".

Officers are understood to have moved in when 12 demonstrators each lit up
a cannabis cigarette.

Veteran campaigner Colin Davies, who has smoked the drug to relieve pain
since he broke his spine four years ago, was among those detained in
Tuesday's raid on the Dutch Experience Cafe in Stockport.

He launched the venture in September this year, saying he hoped to offer
the drug to sick people to relieve their symptoms.

Charged

The 44-year-old, of Romney Towers, Brinnington, Greater Manchester, faces a
number of drug-related charges including permitting premises to be used for
the smoking of cannabis, possessing cannabis with the intent to supply,
possessing a controlled drug and being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Two other men were charged while a further nine people were cautioned for
possession of cannabis.

Last month the Home Secretary proposed the drug be reclassified from Class
B to Class C and that possession be a non-arrestable offence.
