UK: MEP in court on drug charges
Ananova
Thursday 20 Dec 2001 A Euro MP is due in court on drug charges after being arrested during a protest over Britain's laws. Liberal Democrat Chris Davies was arrested presenting himself at Stockport police station with cannabis on the back of a stamp. He says he hopes his arrest will finally help start a "serious debate" about the use of cannabis. The MEP for the North West of England is due before magistrates in the town charged with possession. Greater Manchester Police have attacked the MEP for time-wasting and have urged him to use his influence as a politician to change laws rather than break them. Mr Davies says that as a member of the European parliament, he is in no position to lobby for a change in British laws.
