UK: Cannabis protest MEP in court

The BBC

Thursday 20 Dec 2001

---
An Italian MEP has been charged with possession of cannabis while another
MEP appeared in court following a protest over Britain's cannabis laws.

Marco Cappato, 30, from Milan, Italy, had attended the hearing of MEP Chris
Davies who was
arrested on Saturday during a protest outside a Stockport police station.

Mr Cappato, a supporter of Mr Davies, the Liberal Democrat MEP for the
North West, walked from the court on Thursday to an adjacent police station
clutching a small amount of cannabis and was promptly arrested.

He has been charged with possession of cannabis and bailed to appear at
Stockport Magistrates Court on 27 December.

Mr Davies appeared at Stockport Magistrates Court charged with possession
of an illegal substance, but was not asked to enter a plea and opted to be
tried before a jury.

He was bailed until his next court hearing on 29 January.

Outside the court Mr Davies vowed to continue his campaign for the
legalisation of cannabis.

"It is not proportionate that we can buy a bottle of whisky or any other
alcohol that can cause more harm to the body and to society through the
violence it engenders than a small amount of cannabis consumed in coffee or
cake," he said.
