UK: Italian MEP in court on cannabis charge
Ananova Friday 21 Dec 2001 An Italian MEP is due in court charged with possessing cannabis after walking into a British police station clutching a small amount of the drug. The move by Marco Cappato was in protest at Britain's current drug laws, and in support of fellow MEP Chris Davies. Mr Davies had earlier been remanded on unconditional bail in Stockport, Greater Manchester, on a similar charge of possessing cannabis. Outside court Mr Cappato said: "We came here today to express our support, which is political support for Chris Davies and for his actions. "Maybe now the time has come for a more transnational campaign on this issue. "This is why we are here, this is why we are expressing our political support against the counterproductive prohibition drugs laws." Milan resident Mr Cappato, 30, from the country's Radical Party, will also appear at the town's magistrates' court. Liberal Democrat MEP Mr Davies was arrested on Saturday after he presented himself at Stockport police station brandishing a small amount of the prohibited drug on the back of a postage stamp. He will again appear before magistrates for committal on January 29.
