UK: Employers 'facing growing drug misuse problem'
Ananova
Friday 21 Dec 2001 A report for the TUC says employers are likely to face increasing problems related to drug and alcohol misuse by their workers. The research found that many firms have no policies for dealing with staff suffering from drink or drug problems. The union organisation is urging companies to raise awareness among staff and draw up plans to deal with workers who need help. According to the TUC, workers will feel more confident about approaching their employer if they know they will be helped rather than disciplined. Recent studies have suggested that drink and drug related problems are one of the commonest causes of sickness absence. TUC general secretary John Monks, commented: "Alcohol and drug misuse is a growing problem, which has the potential to rob people not only of their health, but their jobs, self-respect, families and friends. "The introduction of a comprehensive, planned drug and alcohol policy covering the whole of the workforce can have significant benefits for employers, employees with a problem, as well as for their colleagues."
