UK: Teen revellers in drug alert
Sky News Thursday 27 Dec 2001 The Government has launched a £1.5m campaign to prevent children as young as 11 getting high on New Year's Eve. Officials are targeting the clubs, pubs and other party spots where youngsters may be tempted to dabble with drugs over the holiday period. They are urging the millions of 11- to 18-year-olds at risk to stop and think of the "less dramatic side-effects" hard drugs inflict on their body, such as depression, paranoia and even heart problems. The latest figures show Class A drugs including heroin, cocaine and ecstasy are used at least once a year by some 220,000 teenagers in England. And more than three times as many take 'softer' drugs like cannabis. The campaign advises youngsters to call the National Drugs Helpline, on 0800 776600, for reliable information about drugs, rather than being misinformed by " friends, drug dealers or urban myths".
