The lead singer of Birmingham chart-toppers UB40 claims he has beaten
the booze that threatened to kill him - by smoking cannabis.

Ali Campbell was downing two bottles of whisky a day and was told by a
top Harley Street doctor if he did not curb his drinking he would die.

The 42-year-old father of five said he had not touched a drop since
November which he put down to smoking cannabis.

The singer said all eight members of UB40 smoked cannabis and supported
its legalisation. He blamed 20 years of partying for being permanently
drunk.

On tour, it was cheap and free drink from early morning through to
parties at night, he said. "That's all I did for 20 years. Looking back,
I was permanently drunk."

Campbell said: "I now get up at 6am every morning to look after my ten-
month-old son Louis and take my other kids to school. I do sit-ups, take
country walks, things like that. They're things I couldn't have done
before."

The band is currently preparing for a massive celebration concert at
Birmingham NEC on September 13 to mark the 21st anniversary of their
first hit record.
