UK: Harry Admits Taking Drugs
Sky News
Sunday 13 Jan 2002 Prince Harry has admitted to smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol. St James's Palace said it was a "serious matter" which was "resolved within the family" and is "now in the past and closed". Prince Charles took him to a rehabilitation clinic in London for the day to give him a shock, the News of the World reported. He fell in with a crowd of older lads at a pub close to his Highgrove home and began taking drugs at parties last summer aged just 16, it claimed. Police investigation The News of the World's royal reporter, Clive Goodman, said Prince Charles offered his full co-operation and the story was "no intrusion". "We've been working completely side by side with St James's Palace," he told Sky News. "These are clear-cut matters of public interest." Meanwhile the Mail on Sunday claimed Prince Harry, now 17, was also at the centre of a police investigation into after-hours drinking at a pub near Highgrove. He is accused of being involved in a mock fight during a late-night pool-playing session at a pub in Sherston, Wiltshire, and swearing at a French employee before being ordered to leave. Scuffle The landlady, Emma Carter-Williams, told the newspaper: "Everyone knows Prince Harry's barred but I don't want to talk about it. He's not the only one." The newspaper said the inquiry was sparked by an incident last January. Harry was locked out of the pub by two friends during their after-hours game. During the ensuing scuffle the prince was asked to leave by chef and under-manager Francois Ortet. Harry initially refused. Concerns about possible breaches of licensing laws were raised by the prince's royal protection officers and passed to local police.
