UK: Boy in court after police dog sniffs out cannabis at school

Thursday 17 Jan 2002

A schoolboy has been conditionally discharged for six months after cannabis was found in his coat by a police sniffer dog during a drugs awareness visit.

The 15-year-old pleaded guilty to possessing 1.5 grammes of cannabis resin when he appeared before a youth court in Barnstaple, north Devon.

The spot check by the dog was arranged by police as part of a special assembly on substance abuse.

The court was told that the boy admitted the cannabis and a pipe were his.

The prosecutor said the boy believed the law relating to cannabis had changed, but he accepted he was in possession of an illegal drug.

His defence, said the amount of cannabis in the boy's possession was just enough to make one smoke.

A Devon County Council spokesman said that the boy had been temporarily excluded from the school for a number of days.

Two other 15-year-old boys and one 16-year-old boy were also temporarily excluded, after receiving police reprimands.

The return of all the students was conditional on them and their parents agreeing to take part in a programme of counselling and support on substance abuse.
