UK: Six Battle It Out At Crucial By-Election

Six candidates are set to fight the Braintree District
Council by-election - which could upset the balance of
power on the labour-run authority.

Polling to fill the vacancy in west ward,
created by Labour councillor Chris Bacon moving to
Singapore, will be January 31.

Labour currently has 29 of the seats, after Cllr Barbara
Buchan switched from Labour to Independent Labour last
year. The combined forces of other parties and
independents total 30.

Labour's candidate is Graham Darwood, 30, a solicitor
specialising in employment law, who lives in Braintree.
He is keen to ensure new developments create a harmonised
town with exciting opportunities and good facilities.

Don Barnard, 60, who has lived in the town for 35 years,
is standing for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance. He will
be campaigning to legalise cannabis as a crime reduction
measure to free police to tackle other problems.

Terry Brooks, 56, a businessman, the choice of the Liberal
Democrats to contest the seat, said: "My vision for local
government is less on bureaucracy and spin and maximum
investment in local services that matter to people."

Independent John Buchan, 56, who has lived in Braintree for
20 years, says he will be standing to "give something back
to the people and the area of his adopted home." He is
married to Barbara Buchan, the independent Labour
councillor for Braintree West,

Duncan Stewart, who is in his 20s is the Green Party choice.
He has stood previously and has campaigned extensively on
planning matters, particularly against the building of new
homes in low-lying areas near the river.

The Conservative's man is Roger Walters, 55, a county
councillor who has been pushing for an investigation into
power cuts in the area. His other priorities include campaigning
for cost effective recycling and support for the rejuvenation
of the town centre.
