UK: Drug Dog Collars School Dopes
Sky News
Thursday 17 Jan 2002 A north Devon schoolboy has appeared in court after a police sniffer dog, taking part in a drugs awareness visit to his school, found cannabis in his coat. The unnamed 15-year-old pleaded guilty to possessing 1.5 grams of cannabis resin when he appeared before a youth court in Barnstaple. He was conditionally discharged for six months and ordered to pay £20 costs. Dangers of drugs The cannabis was sniffed out by Devon and Cornwall police dog Bonnie, who was at the school with her handler for a talk warning pupils about the dangers of drugs. Prosecutor David Burgess said the cannabis, together with a pipe, was found by the dog in the pocket of the boy's coat, which was hanging up. The prosecutor said the boy believed the law relating to cannabis had changed, but he accepted he was in possession of an illegal drug. Tim Hook, defending, said the amount of cannabis in the boy's possession was just enough to make one smoke. Suspended A Devon County Council spokesman said the boy had been temporarily excluded from the school for a number of days and would return to classes when that was completed. Two other 15-year-old boys and one 16-year-old boy were also temporarily excluded after receiving police reprimands.
