UK: 'Legal limit' for drivers on drugs

LAWS about drugs-and-driving, including the possible setting of a
legal limit, need to be clarified, the RAC said yesterday.

It added that high profile Government campaigns were also needed to
highlight the potential dangers of taking drugs and then driving.

'The law regarding drugs and driving needs to be clarified,' said
Edmund King, the RAC Foundation executive director. 'The Government
faces a moral dilemma. Do we need to set a 'legal' limit for illegal
drugs? Traces of cannabis can stay in the body for up to a month,
cocaine for three days and Ecstasy for between two and four days.

For the police to prove that someone was driving while unfit through
the use of drugs we may need to set limits.'

In a department of Transport study a random sample of road traffic
accident deaths revealed that 18 percent of those who died had been
driving after taking drugs.
