UK: Woman unknowingly takes hemp plant to Gardeners' Question Time event

---

A gardener took a plant to a Gardeners' Question Time to learn she had been
cultivating cannabis in her greenhouse.

Pat Bush said the plant took root after she spilt bird seed then it
virtually took over her greenhouse.

She thought it was an unusual variety of tomato.

Experts at Worcester Garden Centre confirmed the plant was cannabis hemp.

"The plant came up through the soil of the greenhouse after I'd spilled some
birdseed," she told the Worcester Evening News.

"At first, I thought it was a seedling of a tomato plant. I started to water
it and it looked like a poppy. But, when it grew so big that I was
struggling to get into the greenhouse, I began to have my suspicions."

She took it to the event at Worcester Garden Centre to ask the Question Time
panel their advice on the plant and was told to destroy it because it was
from the same genus as cannabis.

The centre's director of gardens, Neil Gow, said: "Normally, really hot
conditions are needed for this plant to grow. I think our favourable summer
caused this to happen.

"Although not a pure cannabis plant, I believe people could use it to smoke
illegally."
