UK: Private school wants pupils to pay for 50 pound drug tests
Ananova
Wednesday 30 Jan 2002 A top private school wants pupils who admit smoking cannabis to pay for future random drug tests. Edinburgh Academy head John Light says the £50 tests will help keep the children off drugs in future. He wants the pupils to pay for them out of their pocket money. He says they'll be expelled if the tests are positive. A number of pupils at the £7,000-a-year school have admitted using cannabis after a school inquiry. The Daily Record says the head teacher has written to the pupils' parents asking them to sign a consent form agreeing to the tests. "Information was passed on to us and we acted on it," he said. "It is our duty to keep drugs out of school and to protect the pupils. As we have seen, drugs can affect any family and any school in the country. You can't keep drugs out simply by putting up school railings." Parents are asked to pay a £50 fee to cover the cost of bringing in a nurse to administer the tests. Mr Light tells parents they should make their children pay them back out of their allowances. The Scottish Council for Independent Schools says it's up to the individual school to decide on its policy for dealing with drug abuse among pupils.
