Study finds strong link between cannabis and depression
Ananova
Wednesday 06 Feb 2002 Australian researchers have found a strong link between smoking cannabis and depression. Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital gathered data by monitoring 2,000 youths aged 14 to 21 for seven years. George Patton from the hospital's Centre for Adolescent Health says the effects are particularly noticeable in young women. "The findings are very, very striking. The effects are profound, particularly in young women where the rates of mental health problems have increased many, many times in daily cannabis users," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. "This is the best evidence yet that ... cannabis is bad for your mental health and does cause higher rates of depression and anxiety problems." The findings have not yet been published and Professor Patton was reluctant to release any more details. The results are expected to be published in an international journal shortly.
