UK: West Man Puts Dope On Trial
Big Issue (Southwest Edition)
Monday 04 Feb 2002 A man who plans to open the Southwest's first cannabis cafe appeared in court last week charged with possessing the drug. Mike Cottee is one of dozens of people preparing to use their cases to highlight what they see as the police's hypocritical approach to the drug. Cottee, who wants to open his cafe in Taunton, appeared alongside 19 other pro-cannabis campaigners, including two MEPS. All 20 defendants, arrested while on marches in support of the Dutch Experience cafe in Stockport last year, elected for trail by jury at crown court. There are already 11 similar cases proceeding through the legal system with each case expected to cost around 15,000 pounds. Cottee said, "I know it is wasting money now, but think of all the money that will be saved when they legalise cannabis. Money not spent on prosecuting people who take this harmless herb, could instead be spent on education and health."
