UK: Cannabis hopes take GW higher

Martin Barrow

---
SHARES of GW Pharmaceuticals rose 15p to 146p yesterday amid hopes that its
cannabis-based drugs could be available by prescription in Britain within
two years.
The government-funded Medical Research Council has confirmed that it is
testing cannabis-based tablets on hundreds of sufferers of multiple
sclerosis (MS).

The results of those tests, expected at the end of this year, will be
forwarded to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, the UK's
medical watchdog, which will decide whether the tablets should be offered
on prescription through the NHS.

Cannabis is favoured by many MS and cancer sufferers, who say it kills pain
and stimulates appetite without the corrosive side-effects of many
prescription alternatives. Yesterday Dr Geoffrey Guy, GW's executive
chairman, said: 'This is a positive move by the Government.'

The Multiple Sclerosis Society, the UK's largest charity for the 85,000
British people affected by the crippling disorder, said it welcomed any
new, safe treatments.
