UK: Dublin bus chiefs to smoke out illegal puffers
Reuters
Wednesday 20 Mar 2002 DUBLIN (Reuters) - Dublin bus staff are going undercover in a bid to smoke out passengers who light up illegally, the city's main bus operator says. Illicit smoking of both cigarettes and cannabis on public transport is on the increase in Ireland, where half the population is under 30 and years of economic growth have fuelled a party culture. Dublin Bus, which operates the capital's buses, said it had enlisted "plainclothes" staff to combat the problem and catch passengers in the act of lighting up. "Unfortunately the situation has deteriorated over the past 12 to 18 months with people smoking on buses," a spokesman for Dublin Bus told Reuters. However, prosecuting people who smoke on public transport is difficult in Ireland because a witness is needed to confirm that an offender has lit up, something many passengers are reluctant to do.
