UK: Entrepreneur plans pumping cannabis smoke into cafes
Ananova
Monday 18 Mar 2002 An entrepreneur plans to set up cafes where cannabis smoke is pumped into the air. The idea is that consumers will not need to smoke tobacco to become intoxicated. Simon Woodroffe wants to create elegant city centre cannabis cafes that are very different to those in Amsterdam. The 48-year-old, who owns a chain of sushi restaurants, also plans to set up Japanese-style capsule hotels in Edinburgh. On his cannabis cafes plan, he said: "I am not an advocate of legalising marijuana, or that people should drink more. "In a hundred years, I hope, as a nation, we won't need to indulge so excessively in drink and drugs. But cannabis cafes are likely to happen here as things are moving very fast at the moment. "We want to ensure they are done properly and not like the tacky and dodgy ones you find in Amsterdam. "They should be elegant city centre cafes aimed at the educated population backed by serious licensing. We do not want to start at the bottom of society, nor do we want to turn them into cigar bars." Of his hotel plan, the Yo Sushi! owner told The Scotsman: "The idea behind Yotel! is to create a factory-built hi-tech capsule room that you could stand up in. "It would feel like a cross between a Japanese capsule hotel room and travelling first class on British Airways. We are starting to look at sights in cities over the next couple of months, but we would look to target Edinburgh, London and Glasgow."
