UK: 'Business as usual' for cannabis police chief

Monday 18 Mar 2002

---
Police chief Commander Brian Paddick has vowed to "continue business as
usual" over allegations he smoked cannabis.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens is reviewing the
newspaper allegations which Mr Paddick denies.

This comes a week after Mr Paddick was summoned to meet Sir John after he
wrote on the Urban 75 website that he found the concept of anarchy
"attractive".

Mr Paddick subsequently refused to say whether his views had been
misrepresented, saying that he and the Commissioner had agreed that they
would not discuss the remarks publicly.

The officer told the BBC: "Unless I am told otherwise, I am going to
continue business as normal.

"I plan to come here this morning to explain to my officers about the
furore whilst I have been away, about Urban 75 and I clearly I have got a
bit more explaining to do."

Mr Paddick's former boyfriend James Renolleau claimed to have shared at
least 100 joints with the senior policeman.

It was claimed Mr Paddick, 43, who pioneered a "softly-softly" approach to
cannabis in Brixton, south London, had also allowed Mr Renolleau to take
the drug at their London flat.

Mr Paddick, Britain's most senior openly gay policeman, said he "totally"
rejected the claims, adding: "On a couple of occasions James purchased some
cannabis while we were living together and smoked it in front of me.

"I argued with him about the implications for me being in the same place
while he was doing this. If the media found out that my partner was smoking
cannabis in my flat, it would put my career at risk."
