UK: Public school suspends cannabis-smoking teacher

A biology teacher has been suspended from a West Yorkshire public school
after admitting growing and smoking cannabis.

Trevor Andrews says he believes drug use among children is not a
problem, as long as they supply each other rather than use dealers and
don't come to school stoned.

Bradford Grammar's decision to suspend him comes a month after 18 sixth-
form pupils were sent home for smoking dope during their lunch hour.

According to the Yorkshire Post, headteacher Stephen Davidson says he is
investigating Mr Andrews' claims that the school has a massive drugs
problem.

A spokesman for the school said: "A member of staff on a fixed short-
term contract is currently suspended from school. It would be
inappropriate to make any comment on this issue whilst the internal
investigation takes place."

The newspaper quotes Mr Andrews saying he was suspended on full pay
after admitting he had been arrested and cautioned for growing cannabis
in the basement of his home in Ilkley.

The 46-year-old said: "It was just for my own personal use. I grow my
own because it's so much more powerful. I've used it on and off for 30
years.

"I informed the school that they had a massive drugs problem that
stretched right down to the third year. Personally, I don't think it's a
problem as long as the kids aren't coming to school stoned.

"It's only when they start using dealers that it gets dangerous because
the dealers give them heroin."

Mr Andrews says he never promoted or discouraged cannabis use, but tried
to answer pupils' questions about drugs honestly - warning them of the
risks of cancer and lethargy.
