Canadian study shows cannabis 'lowers IQ'
Ananova
Tuesday 02 Apr 2002 Scientists in Canada say cannabis use lowers IQ. Their tests show using it five times a week leaves a measurable effect on intelligence. Smoking more than five times led to a drop of four points, which may not be noticeable in an individual but would drag down the average of the population. The study at Carleton University, Ottawa, took eight years to complete and involved nearly 80 children. Their IQs were tested between the ages of nine and 12 and again between 17 and 20. There are signs that IQ can recover if a young person gives up within three years of starting the habit. The research was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
