UK: Drug firm doubles cannabis trials

Thursday 11 Apr 2002 LONDON (Reuters) - Drug firm GW Pharmaceuticals (LSE: GWP.L, news), which is developing cannabis-based prescription drugs, says it is expanding its clinical trials programme to cover four new potential areas of treatment. The company said on Thursday the new Phase III trials would examine the effectiveness of cannabis-based medicines in treating pain and sleep in patients with spinal injury, Multiple Sclerosis and a variety of neuropathic problems. The new Phase III trials take the total number being conducted by GW Pharma to seven. Drugs have to pass Phase III trials before coming to market.
