UK: Cannabis cafe directs customers via northwalespolice.com
Ananova Tuesday 14 May 2002 A cannabis campaigner is using a police force name to advertise his Dutch-style coffee shop on the internet. Jeff Ditchfield, of Henllan, Denbighshire, paid £12.99 for the domain name northwalespolice.com. The name is directly linked to a site advertising the Beggars Belief - a cannabis cafe which Mr Ditchfield will open in Rhyl next month. Mr Ditchfield, 42, says he bought the name to try to open a sensible debate with North Wales Police and had no intention of embarrassing the force. He said: "From the very beginning of this project I have written to various MPs, AMs, councillors and the police to explain what I am doing. "I wanted to work with North Wales Police and explain, for example, that the shop is only open to over-18s and there will be no hard drugs or alcohol allowed. But North Wales Police have refused to speak to me and have any kind of sensible discussion. "If they want the northwalespolice.com name from me, then I am happy to give it to them. And if we meet to arrange the transfer, then it would be a good opportunity to discuss other matters. I did not intend the name to link to the Beggars Belief site and I will be asking my web people to disable the link as soon as possible. "North Wales Police are a professional force. I rely on them like any other person and I want to work with them, so I wouldn't set out to deliberately embarrass them or misrepresent them." Bill Brereton, Deputy Chief Constable of North Wales Police, said: "If Mr Ditchfield bought the site then that is his prerogative. "If he misrepresents himself so that he appears either to impersonate a police officer or represent the views of the police force then this is something he clearly must not do."
