UK: Third cannabis cafe to open

Friday 31 May 2002 Campaigners for the legalisation of cannabis are planning to open Britain's third "pot cafe". The Amsterdam-style coffee shop, to open at an undisclosed location in Leicester, will allow customers to openly smoke the drug behind closed doors. But police have stressed they will not endorse the cafe and will work to bring anyone involved in the misuse of drugs before the courts. Cannabis entrepreneur Chris Peabody, from Leicestershire, is behind the plans for the members' only dope cafe, set to open its doors to smokers in July. No drugs or alcohol will be sold at the cafe, strictly for over-18s, but the 31-year-old has said he will permit cannabis users to take the drug on the premises. He said: "People can come in and drink tea and coffee and play Scrabble. If they choose to smoke it is up to them. "It is exactly the same as a group of friends sitting around in a house smoking it. I am a private person who really does believe that what I am doing is right. If everybody stood quietly and just accepted all the rules women would not be allowed to vote today. "I don't want to be in any trouble, however, I do believe that stopping people doing this is wrong and therefore if you are passionate enough about it you stand up for it." He said he started taking cannabis at the age of 17 following an injury at work, and it stopped the pain. "It is a lot less harmful than alcohol or cigarettes," he added
