UK: Tories vow to 'rethink' cannabis policy

Sunday 14 Jul 2002 A future Conservative government would think again about the reclassification of cannabis announced by the Government this week, a senior shadow cabinet member says. Shadow chancellor Michael Howard says he believes David Blunkett's move is misguided. Earlier this week Mr Blunkett announced that cannabis is to be reclassified from Class B to Class C, so possession will no longer be an arrestable offence. But Mr Howard, a former Home Secretary, told the BBC: "I think David Blunkett has made a mistake and I would be astonished if when we return to government we stick to the policy that he introduced this last week."
