UK: Drug group in Games 'hijack'
Manchester Online
Friday 19 Jul 2002 CHEEKY cannabis campaigners have hijacked the Commonwealth Games to promote their call for the drug to be legalised. Unsuspecting visitors to the internet page, which has a similar name to the official Games website, are invited to view the "Commonweed Games". It also urges people to support Colin Davies, who is in Strangeways awaiting trial accused of supply and possession of the drug. Games bosses today warned people the website had no connection whatever to the sporting spectacular. Mr Davies opened the Dutch Experience, the UK's first Amsterdam-style "coffee shop", claiming it was part of a campaign to help those with debilitating illnesses get access to cannabis. The shop in Hooper Street, Stockport, has been the subject of a number of high-profile police raids and it was during one of these that Mr Davies was arrested. The website says the 1st Annual Colin Davies Commonweed Games will consist of "Tug of War - Hemprope of course, Fastest Joint Roller, Bong- jumping, Relay Race using a joint instead of a baton, and a race around Strangeways." The site welcomes "all the visitors to the Games and hope that you will all take time to support our cause." It also adds that "we will be at the opening ceremony (and the other events) in support of Colin Davies, the founder of the Dutch Experience, the first cannabis coffee shop in the United Kingdom." A spokeswoman for Commonwealth Games said: "The official Commonwealth Games website is well-established. If anyone stumbles on to other websites with similar names, it shouldn't take them long to realise they are not on the right site. "If they are having any problems, they can contact our information line." Web manager and Colin Davies supporter Jeff Ditchfield said: "I was surprised the name was still available. "It turned out a bargain at just £12.99. "Some people might stumble on to our site by mistake, but within a couple of seconds. I'm sure they'll realise they should be looking somewhere else. "You never know. They might want to come to our Games instead." Since launching last week, the website has already received more than 4,000 hits.
