UK: Cannabis - you have your say

Bridlington Free Press

Thursday 11 Jul 2002

---

A PUBLIC forum to discuss the idea of a Dutch-style coffee shop in
Bridlington will be held at the Priory Church Rooms.

The church has agreed to host what is believed will be the first open
public debate on the matter in Britain, according to the two men who
want to open the cafe.

Businessmen David Street and James Fraser will address visitors on why
they want to open a cafe near the town centre, which would allow
customers to smoke cannabis which they had bought elsewhere.

Representatives from Bridlington police, drug action groups and the
Multiple Sclerosis Society have been invited to join the two businessmen
on the panel.

Mr Street, who lives in the Bempton Lane area of Bridlington, said: "We
will invite them to speak for 10-15 minutes about how their organisation
or group feels about cannabis in this town.
"Effectively, it will then become an open floor for people to ask
questions to whoever they want.

"We want to keep it orderly and make sure we hear everybody's point of
view. We live in a democratic country.

"It's just a matter of finding out what the people want. We will decide
what our next step is after that."

The forum will be held in the Priory Church Rooms, on Saturday, July 20,
between 6pm-9pm. The Rev John Wardle, rector at Priory Church, said: "I
am happy for them to use the church rooms for an open debate about the
issue because I'm open-minded about it myself. This is a chance for
people to express their opinions."

In May, the Free Press exclusively revealed approaches had been made to
the town's police about the viability of opening the premises.

Mr Street said drugs would not be sold on-site, and the consumption of
harder drugs would not be tolerated.

He also stressed that anyone found with cannabis or any other illegal
drug at the forum would be reported to the police.
