UK: Adult voters snub plans to relax cannabis law

---
More than half of British adult voters do not support the Home Secretary
plans to relax penalties for cannabis possession.

A Guardian/ICM poll found only 38% approved of the new policy.

But there is a clear age divide, with 54% of those aged 18 to 35 and 55% of
25 to 34 year olds saying they approved of the change.

The majority (54%) of adults aged 35 to 64 disapproved of the plans, with
opposition strongest among the over-65s (76%).

The poll coincides with the modification of the pilot scheme introduced
last year in Lambeth, south London, where cannabis users were cautioned but
not arrested.

The modified experiment sees officers adopting a "seize and warn" policy in
most cases.

A person found in possession of cannabis will only be arrested if there are
"aggravating factors".

A random sample of 1,002 voters aged over 18, from across the country, were
interviewed by telephone between July 26 and 28.
